We have started opinion writing! I love teaching this type of writing to 1st graders, but more than that, I love READING what they come up with! In an opinion piece, you have to state your opinion (beginning sentence), give supporting reasons of why you think this (middle sentences), and close with your opinion or a question to your reader (ending sentence). This opinion writing was "Why I Should Be The Tooth Fairy." Check it out:
To get our brains thinking about opinions, we filled out job applications to be Tooth Fairies. The kids had to think about what qualities they had that would help them get the job.
We planned out our opinion & supporting reasons.
Then, we published our writing!
