Last week, we started our first Science experiments! Here are a few snapshots from our lab on Friday. The kids predicted how many drops of water they could fit on top of a penny before it would spill off the sides. Most predicted somewhere between 2-6 drops, and they were so surprised to find out they could actually fit 20-40ish drops! If someone bumps the table or you accidentally touch the dropper to the penny, it spills...so this took serious 1st grade concentration. If you've never done this experiment before, the water molecules will stick together and cause the water to "bubble up" on top of the penny like a dome. The smaller the dropper, the more drops you can fit. The year that my kids used teeny tiny droppers, we fit over 60 drops on some pennies. Oh, and FYI our water wasn't hazardous..some of us just tried out the goggles to practice extreme science lab safety. :) After all, we ARE first grade scientists now!
