Measuring with Lizards

This lesson was our intro to measuring with nonstandard units (using multiple copies of the same object--not rulers/inches). We read a book about lizards standing "nose to tail" and lining up to measure things. The kids made their own lizard rulers and set out to practice measuring around the classroom. Most of the kiddos started by measuring a neighbors head or arm, just like in the story. Oh, but when one person started measuring the Christmas tree that got their wheels thinking! You should've seen everything they measured in lizards!! Miss Love's hair even made it into the lesson. :) Measuring with nonstandard units is something easy to practice at home, too. They could use cheerios, pennies, dried pasta, anything with multiple pieces the same size. The possibilities are endless! :)
