Counting Collections

Every few weeks, students work with a partner on a "Counting Collections" activity.  They take a collection of objects and work together to organize, sort, and count their items...using various efficient strategies.  Afterwards, they record their methods and share out with the class.  I LOVE seeing all of the different ways their brains think!  Some students count by 1's, some sort into groups and add the numbers together, some sort by 10s and 5s, some attempt new methods.  I took this picture, after this group impressed their teacher!!  They decided to sort and count their objects in groups of 20!!  How efficient!  They were able to count 104 objects very quickly.  There were lots of "oohs and aahs" in the classroom, as they shared their method with their classmates!  We were also impressed that even though they counted the same way, they recorded their method differently.  There is some great Math thinking going on in room 508!!!
Want to practice this at home??  Easy!!  Give your firstie a box of uncooked pasta, cereal, paperclips, etc, etc, etc...Anything that you have a lot of the same object.  Have them show you different ways to organize and count! :)
