Predictions & Experiments

We conducted our very first Science experiment, in 1st grade!  After learning all about lab safety, the kids were chomping at the bit to start an experiment.  Not only did we do the infamous Mentos in Diet Coke experiment, but we also tried dropping M&M's in Diet Coke to compare.

The first thing we needed to do was predict what would happen when we dropped the candies into the cokes.  There were many different predictions, but most involved some kind of explosion...They were off to a great start!

We shared our predictions with our buddies, while waiting on the experiment to be set up.

The action shot! This is what happened when we dropped 5 Mentos into the Diet Coke.  Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of testing out the M&M's...My camera did not want to cooperate.  :)  We discovered that while the Mentos created the high fountain and emptied the bottle, the M&M's only made a little foam roll out of the top.

After our experiment, we came back inside to compare our predictions to the actual results.  The kids illustrated their findings to share with others.  I think my little scientists are going to love our experiments this year!
